Recover a failed Azure deployment

A project to do with your own tools, with guidance on what to create and capture.

Cloud sandbox Suggested time: 2–3 hoursYour own authorised environment
01

What you could create

A deployment of a small test workload fails after a configuration change. Another administrator needs a repeatable diagnosis and recovery procedure.

What you'll need

Separate Azure learning subscription

Review current prices, quotas and permissions before creating resources. Budget alerts do not cap spending.

Small deployment definition

Use a minimal resource set with synthetic data. Record region, scope, dependencies and the identity performing deployment.

Deployment and cost log

Keep operation errors, relevant configuration changes, verification results and a cleanup inventory.

Access & cost

A cloud account may incur charges. Check current service prices and quotas before creating resources; a budget alert is not a spending cap.

Use a separate learning account or subscription and synthetic data. Keep credentials and administrative endpoints private.

Suggested milestones

  1. 1

    Plan the smallest useful deployment

List the required resources, permissions and dependencies. Decide how to remove everything, including retained storage, before starting.

  2. 2

    Capture a controlled failure

Use a bounded configuration or permission mistake in your own learning subscription. Record the failed operation and its exact scope.

  3. 3

    Diagnose and correct the cause

Compare deployment events with the intended configuration. Make the narrowest justified change and record why broad administrator access was unnecessary.

  4. 4

    Verify and clean up

Confirm both deployment state and intended resource behaviour. Remove the resources and check for retained items or ongoing charges.

Useful resources

Use these resources to deepen your understanding and check key details.

Turn the project into evidence

Keep your artefacts and reasoning together so you can explain what you did.

A useful starting point

Use a disposable resource group and a minimal template. Keep a working version, then introduce a reversible naming or parameter error; avoid deploying costly services.

What a good result looks like
  • The explanation distinguishes the root cause from follow-on errors.
  • The corrected deployment succeeds from the recorded template.
  • The evidence includes validation and confirms that retained chargeable resources were checked.

Finish the project

Remove the exercise resources, including retained storage, snapshots and public IPs. Check the billing view for anything still running.

Independent home-project guidance, not an official vendor lab or a claim of complete exam coverage. Use your own tools and label the work accurately.
